Job in Omaha

by Mortuary Transport Expert ~ July 23rd, 2008. Filed under: Jobs, Removal Stories.

Here’s an ad that tells it like it is. I’m still curious about business models being used. This ad gives hours to call, but is a 24/7 business. If you’re available 24/7 for bodies, is it that much of a difference to take calls for a job ad? I’m kidding of course.

Also, the distance appears rather grueling, when you can be driving as long as 8-9 hours one way, and then have to drive back. Most driving jobs by federal law won’t allow more than 12 hours in one day, so that requires a hotel stay plus meals. Then the question is, who pays? What do you as a compassionate business owner (and you have to be compassionate to be in this line of work) to make sure the client is taken care of properly and that your employee is treated well enough to where they’re happy to get on the road with only 3 hours of sleep.

I agree with preferring retired people, as they are better received by families and facility staff, but they do need to be able to lift. I had one gentleman, 66 years old, dapper dressed as all get out, but I had to be so careful to not include him in any housecalls where the body was over 200 pounds. He’d try his best, but sometimes he just didn’t have it in him. Of course, in SF, we ALWAYS had stairs, so we ALWAYS carried on a stretcher, so you REALLY needed to be able to lift.

That’s why I bought Rescue Randy (which has been sold, by the way) for training, since I wanted to see how people would perform in extreme situations of weight. Now if only we could (for job compatability purposes) subject new employees to some of the extreme emotional situations, like the screamers, the angry at everyone big guys or impossible to please griever.

But you never know what will take you to or over the edge. That’s why I liked the challenge of this job. Every time I thought I was fed up with this line of work, I’d just go home, look at my reasons (my family), take a breath, get some sleep and start over the next day, commited to see if I can do better than the day before.

Any thoughts, anyone?
